Crown City Theatre Company brings Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy filled with passion, mischief and sword play to NOHO.  Director Joanne McGee finds all the wit and satire as well as some good old-fashioned slapstick in this very clear and cut-down production that is sure to thrill audiences from ages 9 to 100. Crown City Theatre Company’s new space at St. Matthew’s LGBT Church is a perfect place to create magic as they bring the isle of Ilyria to life.

If you’ve never given Shakespeare a chance you must try this fast funny easy to understand romp.

About The Show

The show is one of Shakespeare’s best comedies.  The lovesick Duke Orsino of Illyria is relentlessly pursuing the Countess Olivia who will have nothing to do with him.  Viola and her twin brother Sebastian (who look amazingly alike, wink, wink) are separated when their ship goes down in a horrible storm.  Both of them end up on the Isle of Illyria but both think the other has drowned.  Being a woman and alone in a strange place Viola decides to dress as a boy and goes into the Dukes service.  When the Duke sends Viola to Olivia to plead his love, Olivia falls madly for Viola.  Meanwhile, Olivia’s Uncle, Sir Toby, has brought his friend, drinking buddy and the guy with the cash, Sir Andrew, to Olivia’s to pursue her only to find themselves caught up in a plot to bring-down Olivia’s pretentious serving man Malvolio.  Zaniness ensues as the twins are mistaken for each other, Olivia chases Viola, the Duke chases Olivia, Sebastian reaps the benefits and Malvolio is made an ass.
