Pasadena, CA (August 15, 2005) – The 1st annual Pasadena Shakespeare Festival opened Friday, September 9th,2005 with three free performances. Produced by Crown City Theatre Company and co-Sponsored by the City of Pasadena, the festival kicked off its signature year performing William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” free to the public. The 1st Annual Pasadena Shakespeare in the Park series signified a commitment by the Los Angeles – based theatrical company to bring extensive talents in producing and performing Shakespeare to Pasadena. Formerly known as “La Petite Musicale,” the Crown City Theatre Company has over eight years’ experience presenting Shakespeare under the stars. In conjunction with the Henderson Arts Council, their Shakespeare in the Park series grew to become the Las Vegas suburb’s largest, annual cultural event attracting average crowds of 7,000 patrons to shows.
It was there Pasadena resident, actor and producer Matthew Williamson met and worked with director/producer Gary Lamb and producer/musical director William A. Reilly. The three then decided to bring their theatrical expertise back home co-founding Crown City Theatre Company and the 1st Annual Pasadena Shakespeare in the Park series. All three have extensive experience in producing and performing live theatrical performances.
With Memorial Park already home to “Cinema in the Park” and the “Levitt Concert Series,” Crown City believes their Shakespeare festival will be an added attraction to the Old Town district, generating enthusiasm for classical theatre.
